Residency Obligations, Physical Presence & Exemptions
For permanent residents (including those transitioning from SUV, C11, or PNPs), Canada requires a minimum physical presence of 730 days (two years) within any five-year period to maintain PR status. Time spent under a temporary work permit does not count unless the applicant is later granted PR.
For citizenship eligibility, applicants must be physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) within the five years before applying. Up to 365 days spent in Canada under a valid temporary status (e.g., work permit) can count toward this requirement.
There are no official exemptions for business travelers or dual residents, though extended absences may be justified if the applicant is employed by a Canadian business abroad. Documentary proof and tax filings are critical to avoid loss of PR status.
